Global, CBC, CTV and TVO among 2015 Canadian Screen Awards winners

Awards recognizing excellence in television news, documentary and non-fiction coverage were handed out Tuesday and Wednesday night for the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards in Toronto. 

CBC took home eight awards for its sports, documentary, investigative and news coverage. Awards included: Best Local Newscast, Best News Special, Best News or Information Series, Best News or Information Program, Best Direction in a Documentary or Factual Series, Best Science or Nature Documentary Program or Series, Best Live Sports Event and Best Sports Play-by-Play Announcer.

Global’s honours included Best National News Cast for Global National anchor Dawna Friesen, Best Local Anchor for Global BC News Hour anchor Chris Gailus and Best Photography in a News or Information Series for Lev Tahor.

CTV’s W5 was awarded Best News or Information Segment for its “The War Zone” series and Best Host or Interviewer in a News or Information Program or Series for its journalist Tom Kennedy. The network’s Asia bureau chief Janis Mackey Frayer was also recognized with Best Reportage, National from her reporting from Gaza last summer.

TVO took home awards for best History Documentary Program or Series, the Barbara Sears Award for Best Visual Research and Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series.
