The Canadian Journalism Foundation is now accepting applications for the fourth annual Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award.

Canadian photojournalists who have been in the business for less than five years are encouraged to apply – that includes students, freelancers or working photographers. The winner of the award will be placed in a six-week internship with The Canadian Press head office in Toronto sometime between April and September 2013 and will be paid a salary equivalent of the start rate for CP photographers.

Last year’s winner Michelle Siu covered Toronto staple events such as Blue Jays’ games and the Toronto International Film Festival as well as news stories and features.

“Ultimately the internship has made me a better visual story teller,” Siu said in a statement. “The experience has taught me the importance of knowing the story and pushed me to learn how to make a single compelling photo that communicates the story to a wide audience.”

The Tom Hanson Award was created after the award namesakes’ sudden death in 2009 when family, friends, CP colleagues and the journalism community wanted to find a way to appropriately honour his memory.

The application deadline is January 7, 2013 and more information on the award including criteria and submission instructions can be found on The CJF website.  It will be presented at the 16th annual Canadian Journalism Foundation Awards on June 13, 2013.
