The Halifax Gazette, Canada’s first newspaper, began publishing on Mar. 23, 1752, in Halifax.. The weekly newspaper, dependent on the government for funding, was published by John Bushell. Halifax was established as a city just three years before the newspaper was published. The first issue contained coverage of the death of a local military officer and businessman, who succumbed to smallpox in London. Its competition was mainly newspapers reporting on breaking news in Boston and New York.
