Avenue Magazine Editorial Internship The
learning opportunities are vast at this Calgary city magazine where
interns are routinely charged with tasks such as fact-checking,
proofreading, researching, writing and interviewing, in addition to
attending editorial meetings and assisting with administrative tasks.
The internship lasts for four months and is a paid position.
Canada Wide Media Digital Media Editorial Internship This
12-week, full-time internship will give successful applicants the
chance to work with websites such as BCBusinessOnline.ca,
GardenWiseOnline.ca and TVWeekOnline.ca. Intern responsibilities
include: audio and video production and editing, interviewing,
attending content planning sessions, proofreading and more.
Canada Wide Media Magazine Internship This
is an eight-week, full-time editorial internship that will see the
successful applicant try his hand at a variety of different magazines,
including Westworld, Granville and BC Home. Interns will be charged
with writing, editing, proofing, fact-checking and research, among
other things.
Canada Wide Media TV Week Internship This
is an eight-week internship at a British Columbia entertainment and
lifestyle magazine that is offered year-round. The successful intern is
required to have strong writing and editing skills, as well as a
familiarity with pop culture and the entertainment industry.
Canadian Business Internship Canadian Business treats their interns as a valued member of staff and charges them with duties such as writing, researching and fact-checking, though an intern with a keen attitude may find he is trusted with more responsibility. Interns should expect to leave Canadian Business with the ability to fact-check a feature story and several clippings to slip into a portfolio. The Canadian Business internship lasts for 12 months and begins in May. The position is paid.
Canadian Family Editorial Internship Canadian
Family offers two concurrent, full-time, three-month internships
year-round. Successful applicants will be able to hone valuable skills
and will be responsible for fact-checking, blogging and some content
writing, to name a few. The Canadian Family internship is not strictly
a writing internship and has a strong focus on online publishing. This
internship is unpaid.
Canadian Press Summer Internship The
Canadian Press, Canada’s national news agency, offers a handful of
summer positions to fill the posts of reporter/editor, online producer
and editorial assistant. The successful applicants will experience life
in a real newsroom and be required to work for a variety of news
platforms. The ability to speak both French and English is an asset and
having a resume full of multimedia skills under your belt is likely to
give you an edge over other applicants. This position is paid.
Canwest News Service Summer Internship Four
interns are hired every year to work in Canwest’s Ottawa office for
this four-month program. Interns can expect to do both reporting and
editing for newspapers, online and broadcast platforms. Applicants with
experience in more than one news platform will have a competitive edge.
This is a paid position.
Descant Production Editor Internship This
internship is offered four times each year and the successful applicant
will be responsible for assisting all aspect of production for one
issue of Descant and will work under the guidance of the Editor and
Managing Editor. The intern’s responsibilities include corresponding
with writers and artists, copy editing and assisting with the website.
The internship lasts for four-and-a-half months and is a part-time
position (20 hours per week). The intern will also contribute a short
essay for publication in the magazine, for which he will be paid a $100
honorarium. This position is unpaid.
Descant Editorial Internship The
successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the
day-to-day production of the magazine and will work in direct
collaboration with another intern and under the direction of the
Magazine Editor. Intern responsibilities include copyediting,
organizing submissions and responding to mail, email and phone calls.
The editorial internship lasts for six months and is part-time (14
hours per week). This position is unpaid.
Descant Circulation Internship The
circulation intern will work under the direction of the Circulation
Manager and the Managing Editor and will focus on the circulation
aspect of a magazine, including the areas of subscriptions, renewals
and promotional activities. Responsibilities include maintenance of
subscription database and fulfillment of single and back issue orders.
This internship lasts for six months and is part-time (14 hours per
week). This position is unpaid.
Edmonton Journal Summer Internship This
internship is for senior level students who have a strong interest in
daily reporting. Successful applicants will be expected to file
frequent website news reports.
Exclaim! Internship Exclaim!
offers two part-time (18-24 hours per week) internships on a rotating
basis. Interns should be able to work independently, should be
passionate about music and familiar with social media. Experience
working in music media is a huge asset. This position is unpaid. For

Eye Weekly Editorial Internships Eye
Weekly, an alternative weekly based in Toronto, offers three-month,
full-time editorial internships throughout the year. The successful
applicant will be responsible for assisting with writing, fact-checking
and listings preparation.
Fashion Magazine Internships Fashion
offers three- and four-month internships in seven different
departments: editorial, fashion, beauty, photo, marketing, design and
sales. Positions are available at the Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal
offices. Interns will work full-time hours and the majority of their
responsibilities will be administrative, but are invited to sit in on
editorial meetings and gain valuable on-the-job experience. These
internships are unpaid.
Flare Editorial Department Internship This
three-month internship is open to any students studying journalism, art
director or fashion. Priority is given to those who must complete
work-placement hours as a requirement for their degree or diploma.
Geist Internship Geist
interns will be given the opportunity to learn the business of
magazines on the job. Interns will be able to try their hand at every
facet of the publishing business, including editorial, production,
circulation, marketing and circulation. In addition, successful
applicants will be able sit-in on editorial board meeting and take
advantage of free admission to all Geist workshops. This internship may
offer an honorarium.
Green Living Internship This
part-time internship will see successful applicants exercising their
green knowledge while participating in story meetings and assisting the
editors in updating the website. This internship is mostly web-based
and will include many web-related publishing tasks, such as reporting,
researching, proofreading and web production. This internship is
unpaid.
Hamilton Magazine Editorial Internship This
city magazine offers a full-time, three-month internship where
responsibilities will include fact-checking, research and assistance
with administrative tasks. Interns will be immersed in the production
of the magazine and will be expected to pitch story ideas and possibly
write short articles for the magazine. The intern will receive an
honorarium at the end of the contract.
Maclean’s Ann MacGregor Memorial Internship The
Ann McGregor summer internship runs from June through August and
will see the intern testing his stress levels at a weekly magazine
while writing stories and assisting in the editorial department. It is
available to anyone but preference is given to those preparing to enter
their final year of post-secondary study. This position is paid.
Maclean’s One-year Internship The
year-long position starts in May and is considered a fulltime,
entry-level job with interns required to attend story meetings, pitch
story ideas in addition to researching, reporting and writing stories
for the magazine and website. This position is paid.
Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism Established in the memory of award-winning Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, the first Canadian reporter to be killed in Afghanistan since the war began. The fellowship will offer a $10,000 prize to a recent Canadian university graduate (degree can be from any discipline), which will go to fund a news project significant to a Canadian audience. In addition to this, the winner will receive a one-year, paid internship with Canwest, including six months at the Calgary Herald and six months at Canwest News Service in Ottawa. Montreal Gazette Summer Internship The
Gazette’s 16-week summer internship offers positions to both reporters
and copy editors. This internship is only available to those currently
enrolled in a university-level program. Applicants must have a valid
driver’s licence and be fully bilingual, though all stories will be
written in English. This is a paid position.
The Muriel Duncan Observer Internship The
internship, offered by the United Church Observer, runs for 12 weeks
and is an excellent jumping-off point for those interested in pursuing
a career in magazine journalism. The program is offered to anyone under
the age of 30 who is currently enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary
institution. The position is paid.
National Post Summer Internship The
National Post takes on interns to work in its Toronto newsroom each
summer. There are openings in news, business, arts and sports. There
are also openings for copy editors to work the night news desk. Interns
will be expected to pitch story ideas and have strong writing skills.
This is a paid position.
The Province Summer Internship This
internship is tailor-made for a group of self-starters who want to jump
right into daily reporting. Interns should be able to generate story
ideas and cover a variety of topics, from breaking news to sports to
features. A familiarity with issues relating to the Lower Mainland and
British Columbia is an asset. Internships last for about
three-and-a-half months. This is a paid position.
Quill & Quire Editorial Internship Quill
& Quire’s four-month, full-time internship is offered three times
each year, starting in January, May and September. Interns can expect
to both write for the magazine and website as well as fact-check,
research, proofread and perform general administrative tasks. This
internship offers an honorarium.
Rabble.ca Internship (News writing and editing) The
successful applicant will work directly with Rabble’s news editor and
will assist in many of the daily tasks that are necessary to make
Rabble.ca a reality. Intern responsibilities can include regular
news-writing assignments, fact-checking and research. The intern will
be expected to pitch news stories. This internship requires only a
part-time commitment (10-12 hours per week) and the intern will be able
to work from home. This internship is unpaid.
Rabble.ca Internship (The book lounge) This
internship will focus heavily on Rabble’s books section. The intern can
expect to both shadow edit reviews and write the reviews himself, as
well as handling the online events listing and assisting the editor
with administrative tasks. This internship requires only a part-time
commitment (8-10 hours per week) and the intern will be able to work
from home. This internship is unpaid.
Reuters Americas Journalism Summer Internship Interns
at this international news agency will get the opportunity to hone
their reporting, writing and multimedia skills in this 10-week crash
course in business, political and general news reporting. The
internship offers positions in Toronto as well as New York, Washington,
Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston and Latin America. This position is paid.
Saskatoon StarPhoenix Summer Internship Two
summer intern positions are available: one as a general reporter and a
second in the sports department. Applicants should have a keen
attention to detail and be incredibly hard working. This is a paid
position.
Sid Adilman Mentorship Programme The
applicant chosen for the Sid Adilman Mentorship Programme will be given
an all-access pass to cover the 10-day Toronto International Film
Festival (usually falling in the second week of September). The
recipient will be able to hone his reporting skills covering film
screenings, press conferences and red carpets. Applicants must be
enrolled in a full-time journalism or film program and be 19 or older.
The Taddle Creek Protégé Internmentship This program, which Taddle Creek boasts is “more than just a literary magazine internship,” will offer advice and instruction in every area of the magazine industry. Successful protégés will have the opportunity to learn about editing, fact-checking, design, circulation, publishing and more, all under the watchful mentoring eye of more than two-dozen industry professionals. The internship is not full time and will work around the schedules of the intern and instructors, though a minimum six-month time commitment is required. This internship offers an honorarium and some “lovely gifts.”
This Magazine Internship Due
to This’s small staff, interns are treated as an integral part to the
production process and are entrusted with a large amount of
responsibility in addition to the typical intern duties of
fact-checking, proofreading and opening mail. Interns will assist in
every aspect of the production process and self-starters are likely to
be offered more opportunities to hone their skills. The four-month
internships are offered throughout the year (starting in January, May
and September) and those interns who work during the summer months may
have the opportunity to assist with the Great Canadian Literary Hunt.
The internship is unpaid but comes with the guarantee that they will
never make you go on coffee runs.
Toronto Life Editorial Internship Program The
successful Toronto Life intern will be given the opportunity to learn
the ins-and-outs of this popular city magazine. The intern will be able
to participate in story conferences, production meetings and will be
responsible for research and fact-checking. Interns may also write for
Torontolife.com. This is a four-month internship. This position is
unpaid.
Toronto Star One-year Internship The
program runs from September to September and hires two reporting
interns, two copy editing interns and one design intern. The
internships are fulltime, paid and open to any recent graduates under
the age of 30 who have never help a full-time position at a Canadian
daily.
Toronto Star Radio Room Positions
in the radio room are available to students who wish to work part-time
throughout the academic year. It provides a variety of reporting
experience and has students both writing for the newspaper and filing
stories and updates to the Toronto Star website. Reporting experience
at a campus or community newspaper is required. This position is paid.
Toronto Star Summer Program Those
hired for this 10-week contract will fill the shoes of full-time staff
who have left on leave or vacation and are expected to step up to the
plate and perform just as the well-seasoned folks they are replacing.
This position is paid and open to any college and university level
journalism students, including those graduating the year of the program
they are applying for.
Vancouver Magazine Editorial Internship Vancouver
Magazine interns can expect to spend their days fact-checking,
researching, responding to reader queries, attending editorial meetings
and story meetings. Interns may also be given the opportunity to write
sidebars or short articles for the magazine. The internship is four
months long. This internship offers an honorarium.
Vancouver Sun Summer Internship This
four-month program at one of Canada’s largest-circulation dailies will
have interns acting as multiplatform journalists responsible for
breaking news stories throughout the day. Interns will be expected to
post story updates to the website and must be familiar with video and
audio work. The ability to speak Punjabi, Cantonese or Mandarin is an
asset. This is a paid position.
Venture Publishing Editorial Internship Interns
at Venture Publishing will get the opportunity to learn about the
process of putting together a real magazine, and will be able to work
on many Venture titles, including Alberta Venture, Alberta Oil and
Unlimited. This full-time, Edmonton-based internship is offered on a
rotating basis and lasts for three months. Typical intern duties
include fact-checking, copy editing and proofreading, as well as
writing short articles and assessing story ideas. This position is
paid.
Victoria Times Colonist Summer Internship The
only daily newspaper in Victoria, B.C., the Times Colonist hires three
interns to work in the newsroom each summer, two for the news section
and one to work in features. Interns must be able to both take
direction and generate story ideas.
The Walrus Editorial Internship The
Walrus, a Toronto-based general-interest magazine, aims to introduce
young writers to the Canadian magazine industry with their four-month
internship. The position is unpaid but offers some flexibility for
those who need to work a part-time job in addition to the 30-hour
workweek. Interns are involved in all stages of production and will be
charged with fact-checking, proofreading and writing small pieces for
the magazine.
Weddingbells Editorial Internship Interns
who take part in this full-time, three-month internship can expect to
write for the website and the magazine, fact-check, copy edit,
proofread and assist with photo shoots. This position is unpaid.
Western Living Editorial Internship Western
Living’s four-month internship will see successful applicants
fact-checking, researching, attending editorial meetings and assisting
with general administrative tasks. Interns may also be asked to write
sidebars and short pieces for the magazine. This magazine offers an
honorarium.
Windsor Star Summer Internship Successful
applicants will be given the opportunity to learn what it’s like to
work in the newsroom of a midsize daily at this four-month internship.
The Windsor Star is looking for self-starters with strong writing and
reporting skills.
Winnipeg Free Press Internships The
Free Press offers internships to current journalism students both
within the school year (usually to fulfill a class requirement) and
during the summer months. In both instances the intern will be expected
to perform the duties of a working reporter and exposed to the daily
ins-and-outs of the newspaper, all under the guidance of a mentor.
Broadcast Internships
Atlantic Mentorship Program Participants
in the program will be able to take on long-term roles with seasoned
professionals in the film, television and media sectors. On-the-job
training will be provided and the interns will be able to hone their
skills in many aspects of the field. The 26-week program is paid and
offered to any permanent resident of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and
Labrador and New Brunswick.
Canwest Internship for Students with Disabilities This
internship is designed to give Canadian students with disabilities a
chance to learn the broadcast trade at one of Canwest’s broadcast
properties: Global, E! or a Specialty television facility. This
internship lasts for three or four months and is only available to
those currently enrolled in an accredited Canadian post-secondary
institution studying broadcasting or journalism. This position is paid.
CBC Newsworld: Joan Donaldson Scholarship This
internship is meant to reward students who have shown extraordinary
academic performance and who have a strong potential for producing
great journalism. Previous recipients have contributed to top CBC
programs such as Canada Now, The National, Newsworld Today and CBC News
Sunday. The successful applicant will receive a $2,000 award, training
and a four-month internship at one or more locations within CBC
Newsworld. This internship is paid.
CBC Radio Peter Gzowski Internship Created
in honour of Gzowski’s memory, the CBC is offering four summer
internships for applicants’ final year of study. Successful applicants
will spend one week in a radio production crash coursh at the CBC in
Toronto before heading off to a different location to learn first-hand
what makes great radio. Accommodations and travel expenses will be
provided in addition to a weekly salary. The internship is available
only to students enrolled at McGill University, Memorial University,
Trent University and Simon Fraser University.
CHUM Cultural Diversity Mentorship Program This
30-week program, open only to applicants who are a visible minority or
of aboriginal descent, aims to develop knowledge and practical skills
in film, television and interactive media. The successful candidate
will be able to sharpen his creative, administrative and technical
skills and be offered valuable networking opportunities. The position
is paid.
CTV Cross-platform Internship This
25-week program offers the opportunity to gain valuable work experience
in cross-platform delivery and distribution. The intern will work
directly under the supervision of a mentor and will be given the chance
to sharpen his technical, administrative and creative skills with a
focus on new media projects. The program lasts for 25 weeks and offers
a stipend.
DiscoveryChannel.ca internship A
perfect spot for those students interested in science and technology,
this two-month Discovery Channel internship will see students taking
part in many of the day-to-day production tasks, including video
production, polls/quizzes and text stories. Interns will be rotating
between DiscoveryChannel.ca, AnimalPlanet.ca, DiscoveryCivilization.ca
and DiscoverHD.ca. This internship is unpaid.
Daily Planet Internship Interns
worked with the Daily Planet, an hour-long science-based television
show, will assist in many aspects of the show’s production process,
including research, telepromping and script-writing. This internship
lasts for four months and is unpaid.
National Production Program The
program pairs recent graduates with experts in various
production-related fields and enables them to gain valuable, on-the-job
experience that will help them integrate into the industry. Two
programs are offered. The first, the Technical Internship Program, has
successful applicants working with a department head in technical
field, exposing them to a variety of different facets of the production
process. The second, the Administrative/Management Internship Program,
has participants working with production management personnel with a
focus on above-the-line production. Each program is paid, lasts for 26
weeks and is available to any qualifying Canadian citizen.
NFB MediaMakers Mentorship Program The
applicants chosen for this program will receive on-the-job training and
mentoring meant to boost their production skills in the film,
television and interactive media industry. The program lasts for six
months, offers a stipend and is open only to Canadian citizens with
disabilities.
Telefilm Producer Trainee Program This
program, offered to visible minority groups and people of aboriginal
descent, offers top-of-the-line production experience and one-on-one
mentoring. The program lasts for 26 weeks and pays a hefty stipend.
