The city of Vancouver is flooded with journalists during the Games. J-Source checked out how many bodies Canadian news outlets have sent to the Games.
The 2010 Winter Olympics and all the hubbub surrounding the games is likely to be the biggest sports story of the decade, so naturally, the newsies are all over it. Vancouver is flooded with reporters, editors, photographers, producers and broadcasters and many other media folks from across the globe, and we at J-Source were a little curious as to which Canadian English-language news organization has the most bodies on the ground?
Here’s how it all broke down:
CTV Inc. and Rogers Media Inc. (Canada's Olympic Broadcasting Media Consortium, which includes CTV, TSN, RDS, RIS Info Sports, Rogers Sportsnet, OMNI, OLN, V, APTN, ATN, CTVOlympics.ca, RDSolympiques.ca, Corus Quebec and select Rogers radio stations) |

The Canwest News Service team is made up of staffers from most of the company’s major dailies, as well as a handful of staffers working strictly for CNS.

And how do the numbers break down globally? Here are some numbers from VANOC:
|
Press and photographers |
2800 |
|
Broadcast staff |
7000 |
|
Broadcast hosts |
1000 |
Doing the math, this means that roughly 1 in 8 staffers sent to Vancouver worldwide to cover the games is from CTV.
The information for this survey was gleaned from sports editors, managers, senior editors and media liaisons at the aforementioned news organizations.

Wow.
No wonder I've had to go online to read the NYT and BBC sites to find out what's happening in the rest of the world.
Any word yet on the publicly-funded CBC numbers?
